EARLY Christmas presents were given out to a number of excited people at the Slough Christmas lights switch on event on Thursday.

Presenters from Asian Star Radio worked to get the crowd gathered in the town square excited to see the lights turned on with plenty of chances to win prizes donated by sponsors of the event.

Jed McKee, 19 attended the switch on event with his girlfriend Maria Murphy, 20 and sung Jingle Bells in front of the crowd to win a selection of prizes including a large bar of Galaxy chocolate which he gave to Miss Murphy.

He said: "We love Christmas, we come to this most years, we're looking forward to the fireworks.

The lights were turned on at 6pm by the town's mayor Mohammed Rasib and Alisha Kaur who was picked out of the crowd.

Lynsey Hellewell, events officer, said: "I think it's really nice to have someone from the community turn the lights on rather than a celebrity who would cost a lot of money for not very long."
