THE second meeting in the Indoor Open Series attracted 150 athletes to the Thames Valley Athletics Centre, all anxious to get some action after the Christmas break.

Athletes came from as far afield as Guernsey and West Norfolk, and there was a large contingent of WSEH members also eager to demonstrate the effects of their winter training to date.

The 60m sprint provided a bevy of WSEH winners with international Deji Tobais setting the trend in the opening race in 6.84 seconds. Another WSEH international, Alex Haydock-Wilson, 17, won his race in 7.11.

Isaac Osei-Tutu, 18, also delivered with his clocking of 7.21, as did Frank Ahanon on 7.35. Steph Clitheroe was the best of the senior ladies with her time of 7.70.

Rio Lionetti started his afternoon with a win in the U15 race with 7.98, while another 14-year-old, Ilan Bisschops, won his race in 8.18.

Jamie-Leigh White was the best of the WSEH U15 girls with her win in 8.55, with Shanelle Onastas winning the next U15 event in 8.58. Lucy Scott was another U15 winner with 9.18.

Top of the U17 ladies was Caitlin McCara, who was well clear in her race with 8.68. James Haydock-Wilson repeated the feat of his elder brother by winning the U13 race in 8.79.

Newcomers Nick Mannke and Alex Pennycooke were also U13 winners in 8.76 and 8.70 respectively.

The WSEH 60m hurdles were sparse on the ground but Clitheroe notched her second win in 8.59. Michael Louise proved the best of the rest on display with second place in 8.91.

The long jump attracted more WSEH athletes with Lionetti scoring his second victory to win the U15 age group with a personal best of 5.27m. Pennycooke was another to complete the double, winning the U13 with 4.17m.

The fourth Chiltern Cross Country League match of the series at the Milton Keynes Equestrian Centre saw so few athletes make the trip that WSEH slumped down the leaderboard in terms of overall positions.

The one bright spot came from the men’s U20 team of Adam and Blake Moore plus James Tidd, who were placed third.

It was Adam Moore that led the team home with his fifth place in the senior men’s race, a new best, while captain Simon Millet was consistency personified with eighth.

In the senior ladies race, Becky Atkinson was first to cross the finish line for WSEH in a good seventh place. Noah Fletcher was on song with his fifth place in the U13 boys event.

With most of the Chiltern League fixtures taking place in North Bucks, the club will need to consider whether they can continue to support this league next winter.

WSEH were amongst the founder members of the league some 50-plus years ago but current circumstances need to be faced.
