SLOUGH were held to a 2-2 draw by Cambridge City in their Investec Women’s League fixture on Saturday but will be kicking themselves for not securing all three points, writes Dave Wright.

They led 2-1 at the three-quarters stage but, after the short break, were slow returning to the pitch.

The umpires did not wait for them to get back into position, blew the whistle and City race downfield relatively unchallenged with Megan Crowson scoring the equaliser.

Coach Kali Takher looked far from impressed with the officials, but as team manager Bill Griffiths later commented: “Rules are rules I guess.”

It was a cruel blow for the Pink and Blacks as they did enough to win the game.

They had only 13 players - three less than their visitors - and skipper Kat McGonigle was not feeling 100 per cent.

Slough took a 14th-minute lead via Briony Anyon’s deflected shot from a penalty corner, but four minutes later they failed to clear their lines and Miriam Marti-Palet equalised from a short corner.

In the 25th minute, the hosts were awarded a penalty stroke when Sophie Hollerbach was fouled in the circle. No-one appeared keen to take it until Immie Brown stepped up and she kept her cool to dispatch the ball into the bottom left corner.

A move involving Harriett Ward and Lizzy Totten nearly brought another goal, but keeper Polly Oakman was quickly off her line to block Charly Goodman’s effort.

Slough were unable to take advantage when City’s Heidi Baber was yellow-carded just before the hour mark, but they did create the best chance of snatching a late winner, only for Goodman to miss.

The Upton Court Park side remain fifth in the table ahead of this Saturday’s trip to seventh-placed Sevenoaks (12.00 pushback).
