FINCHAMPSTEAD and Wokingham cricket clubs will have new 1st XI captains next year.

James Woodford is taking over at Finch, while Sukhi Kang has been offered the role by the Oaks.

Young spin bowler Woodford is no stranger to the job, as he led the Home Counties Premier League Division 1 side at the back end of last season at the invitation of skipper Dan Lincoln.

Berkshire county star and Middlesex 2nd XI regular Lincoln is staying with the club and will assist with the coaching and recruitment of new players.

And one who looks set to join Finchampstead is Stuart Parsons, who led Wokingham into fourth place in Division 2 last year although he didn't enjoy a particularly successful summer with the bat himself, averaging less than 10 runs a game.

His successor at Sadlers End is expected to be wicketkeeper and batsman Kang, who led the side when Parsons missed a game in August.

Finch have also confirmed Matt Eldridge will continue as their 2nd XI captain, having taken over from club chairman Gary Loveday during last year.

He will be 20 when the 2020 campaign gets underway and, like Woodford, has progressed through the club's junior ranks.

Finch will wait until the new year before appointing the captains for their 3rd, 4th and 5th teams that all play in the Thames Valley League.

Club president Neil Doody, in his role as president of the Thames Valley League, led the tributes to former long-serving committeeman John Goodman, who died last week, when the league held their annual meeting at Slough on Friday.

Goodman also served on the HCPL's committee and scored for Buckinghamshire county teams as well as for Chipperfield (now Chipperfield Clarendon) and Old Merchant Taylors, where he was an honorary life member.
