THE Royal Household are through to the quarter-finals in the men’s county Fours this season after victory against Suttons.

The Household

quartet skipped by Michael Thornton, with Graham Crisp, George Burbridge and Colin Carson resulted in a hard-fought success against competitive opposition led by Chris Hitts.

With the Household three shots in front playing the final end, Hitts could only cut down the deficit by two, resulting in a 16-15 win for the Royals.

Their quarter-finals match on Monday will be at Tilehurst.

In the KLV League, Royal Household were away to Windsor & Eton and, although winning two of the three rinks and losing overall by a single shot (51-50), came away with a 6-4 defeat on points. Top rink honours went to skip Les Pond, Paul Hewson and Alan Speller.

The Kennet League game on Tuesday, again away to neighbours Windsor & Eton, turned out more productive, with a good team effort and only losing on one rink, the Household had a 12-2 win on points. The top rink was that of Rob Taylor, Tom Dynan, Tony Burrell and skip Thornton.

The ladies continued their unbeaten run in the Royal Shield with a decisive home win against Desborough, victorious on all three rinks 71-37 and 10-0 on points. The top rink was skipped by Sara Woolley and included Betty Crisp and Suzanne Duguid (25-11).

There were mixed fortunes in the two home weekend friendlies. In the blistering heat on Saturday, the Household men welcomed Warwickshire Vice Presidents and achieved a resounding 162-90 win. Skip Crisp, Peter Wood, Vic Mitchell and Andy Clemence took top rink honours 35-6.

On Sunday, the six-rink friendly resulted in a win for the visitors, Gloucester City 121-104 with only one winning rink from the Household skipped by Frank Overman and including Tom and Jennie Bosley (23-13).
