ETON Excelsior Rowing Club has started warming up for the summer after launching its 2019 Learn to Row programme.

Dates have been released from April through to August to allow beginners to try their hand at rowing for the first time.

In previous years, a number of people between the ages of 18 and 65 have joined the Learn to Row courses, with many of the newly-inducted rowers taking part in and winning local novice regattas.

Rachel Smillie is Club Captain at Eton Excelsior. She said: “Rowing is an amazing way to get fit, meet new people and make use of the incredible stretch of river we have available to us.

“People from all walks of like have joined our courses and the number of people who have taken up rowing as a result is testament to how much people enjoy it.

“We pride ourselves on being an inclusive and welcoming club and we hope to see new people joining us this summer.”

The Learn to Row sessions take place on a Sunday on these dates: 28th April, 23rd June, 14th July and 18th August.

In addition to the courses, the club has also confirmed it will be opening its doors on Sunday 19th May for people to enjoy a day of rowing at its Novice Regatta.

The annual event, also known as Pubs and Clubs because historically local pub teams entered, aims to encourage people who have never rowed before but would like to try the sport to enter, either as a group of up to four or as an individual, who will then be placed in a team with other beginners.

Those who would like to take part in the event pay £50 to enter and then benefit from a couple of two-hour training sessions alongside other beginners, led by experienced coaches at the club.

Rowing together on the day, the teams are then encouraged to row in full fancy dress if they so choose and a prize is awarded for the best dressed crew.
