SLOUGH captain Max Miles insists the Greenies will fight for every point in Southern Counties North this season.

The newly-promoted Greenies trailed High Wycombe 17-0 before fighting back to go down narrowly 22-21 in their opening match on Saturday.

Their tries came from Ben Foster, Rhys Amos and Charlie Turner, while Miles was successful with his three conversion attempts.

Miles believes Slough can take the positives from their second-half performance at Tamblyn Fields, and he feels optimistic about their chances this season.

He told the Observer: “We went in with expectations not set too high but, we thought if we started well we could put down a marker for the season, but we were a bit taken by surprise in the first-half.

“We tried to play the same way we did last year but it didn’t really work. Defences are a lot better in this league and we will come up against teams that are a lot more clinical. We made silly mistakes and were punished pretty much every time.

“There were some choice words said at half-time, and the heart and passion we put in to get back to within a point leaves us feeling optimistic for the rest of the season.

“We just could not get close enough to get the win in the final 10 minutes because High Wycombe controlled the ball and managed the game, so we could not build any pressure.

“The pressure we put on High Wycombe in the second-half shows us what the league is all about and leaves us thinking we can be competitive and not the wiping boys.

“We feel we’re here to stay and fight for every point and position in the league table.”

Miles continued: “Anything like promotion is out of the question because we’ve just come up. Some people have not played at this level before so our aim is to be the best of the rest.

“There will be more established teams pushing for promotion, but our aim is to be at the higher end of mid-table, then we can develop and build on it next season

“It’s not dizzy heights, we’re just trying to set realistic targets”

Slough travel to Littlemore this Saturday to face a side that were promoted with them from the Berks, Bucks & Oxon Premier last season, though Mikes is taking nothing for granted.

He said: “It’s almost a six-pointer already with us being the two teams promoted last season. We beat them two or three teams last season but will not be taking anything fro granted.

“Littlemore might have recruited over the summer and will come in with their own aims and aspirations. We must still be focused.”
