AS WINDSOR, Slough, Eton & Hounslow (WSEH) Athletics Club star Jake Norris moves towards the close of his season, he can reflect on an impressive and successful year.

Norris joined WSEH back in 2010 and has been with his hammer coach Paul Dickenson since the age of 12.

Dickenson is a two-time Olympian and has developed for WSEH, what is arguably one of the strongest club hammer squads in the UK.

Like other athletes of his calibre, Norris gained a sports scholarship at the Louisiana State University (LSU) and headed there in August of last year.

Having finished his first indoor season in the US with a British best in the 35 pound weight discipline, his focused turned to the 2018 outdoor campaign.

At his first outdoor competition for LSU in March, he broke the British Junior Record in the senior weight hammer with a throw of 70.98m.

He extended the record twice more, culminating with a bronze medal at NCAA Finals with a 73.24m throw.

The beginning of April saw Norris break the British Under-20 record with 79.55m, a distance he extended to 80.45m at the British National Championships shortly after his return to the UK and despite still suffering from jet lag.

Selection for the U20 World Championships followed, where Norris proved his ability to cope in pressure situations. He won the gold medal, again breaking his own record with a massive 80.65m throw.

Norris still holds the British Youth Record with the 5k hammer, which he gained when winning the Silver Medal at the European Youth Championship in 2016 with a distance of 79.20m. A sign of his immense ability.

Despite his status on the UK list, Norris is a consummate club athlete, competing for WSEH whenever his busy schedule allows.
