ASHLEY Smith has explained that Windsor will use pre-season to build foundations ahead of their first-ever campaign in the Hellenic Premier Division.

Windsor returned to training last week but do not play their first friendly until this Tuesday and a match at Penn & Tylers Green (6.45pm), a schedule that Smith believes to be beneficial.

And the first team coach is confident the squad is already in a healthy position with the addition of “three or four” new signings, which are expected to be confirmed next week.

Smith told the Observer: “We’ve done four training sessions so far and are breaking it in gently. It has been nice not to go straight into games. It has been good to get the group back together and starting a little slower.

“A lot of boys come back fit anyway these days and we’ve got a young squad so we have not needed to go straight back into games.

“We work hard in training and play to a high intensity so we’re fit, but games will give you match conditioning.

“I’ve been in camps before where we’ve had two sessions and then gone straight into a game programme.

“It is about getting where we need to be but it’s not a sprint. It is about building our foundation now, embedding our philosophies and how we would like to play.”

Smith remained tight-lipped on the names of new signings and summer departures, but did comment: “We’re in a healthy position. We’ve captured targets but missed out on a few, but that’s part and parcel of the process.

“We’ve got three, possibly four, but would like five or six, but it’s still early days and the new season is a month away. The key is to be where we need to be when the season gets going.”

On players leaving Stag Meadow, he said: “These things naturally evolve and some might be surplus to requirements or not buying into our philosophies.”

Looking ahead to the Hellenic Premier, Smith commented: “It’s a new challenge and one that grew on us towards the end of last year, but it is what it is.

“It’s more good for us because teams will know very little but us, but as always we will focus on ourselves.”
