MAIDENHEAD United Chairman Peter Griffin is confident that no-one would have complained had The Magpies won the National League South title on Saturday.

Maidenhead suffered a 2-1 defeat at the hands of title rivals Ebbsfleet United, which means the race for the championship will go to the final day of the season.

The Magpies will be crowned champions should they win at Margate this Saturday (3pm), but Griffin insists they deserved more against Ebbsfleet at York Road.

He told the Observer: "We did really well for a lot of the game. We were up against Ebbsfleet and you saw the best two teams in the division, the best two teams by quite some way.

"Both teams actually deserve to go up. One is going to win it and one is going to go in the play-offs.

"We got ourselves on top, we worked hard and made ourselves favourites by being 1-0 up.

"Their keeper made a save from Dave Tarpey which prevented it going 2-0. It was an unbelievable save and then they scored within minutes.

"Even when it was 2-1 we has chances so it is very disappointing, but we have got to dust ourselves down and we've got another chance this week.

"It's still completely in our own hands. If we go to Margate and win then we are champions, so we will put Ebbsfleet behind us. That's what a strong team does and that is what Alan Devonshire (manager) will do with the squad."

Griffin continued: "If we had drawn I don't think anyone would have complained, Ebbsfleet or otherwise.

"Both teams played well. There were times when we were dominant and times when they were dominant. They had quite a lot of possession but we play like that.

"We're quite happy conceding a bit of possession and then hitting them on the break, so if we had drawn and been champions we would have thoroughly deserved it. I don't think anyone would have complained.

"Whilst Ebbsfleet won, and fair enough they got the goals and we didn't get that second goal, I don't think for one minute we were off the pace.

"It was a really close game and we could easily have got the draw we needed, or the win."
