MORE than 20 'secret' gardens in Oxton will be open to the public during an award-winning tour in the village this weekend.

Over 4,000 visitors are expected to descend on Oxton village this Sunday (May 12) where 22 gardens will be open for viewing.

Now in its 23rd year, the Secret Gardens of Oxton has become the biggest one-day event in Wirral where garden lovers and families can follow a trail around the village and see what’s behind some of the conservation area’s sandstone walls.

Local shops, bars and restaurants will showcase their wares alongside 28 artisan craft and street food stalls, including homemade cakes and plants.

Musicians and singers will provide a backdrop of entertainment and children’s activities include games and a treasure hunt.

Co-organiser, Kirsty Cotton, said: "We’re really excited that we have some new gardens opening for the first time this year; some residents reopening their gardens after a break last year, and of course some of our regular favourites.

"Our visiting craft and food stalls complement the village’s shops and eateries by offering artisan products, and there’s a chance to win dozens of prizes donated by local businesses.

"There’s something for everyone and it’s a great chance for families to enjoy a day out together, enjoy a special atmosphere and help raise money for local charities.”

Money raised will be split between the Oxton Society, Shaftsbury Youth Club, Wirral Women & Children’s Aid and Friends of Birkenhead Kennels.

Special guests on the day will include Wirral's Mayor & Mayoress, councillor Jerry and Irene Williams as well as Merseyside’s Lord Lieutenant Mark Blundell and wife Suzanne.

The day runs from 10am to 5pm and advance tickets priced £8 (£10 on the day) are on sale in Luna, Drawing Room, Oxton Boutique, The Library and Stirling Wines in Oxton, Homebird in Heswall and Brennan Ayre O’Neill in Bromborough and Prenton.

Tickets can also be purchased at www.theoxtonsociety.co.uk and collected on the day. Parking is free at Oxton Fields, Storeton Road.
