Parents in Swindon have been fined hundreds of pounds after their children failed to attend school regularly.

Several cases were recently heard at Swindon Magistrates' Court. To protect the identities of the young people involved, the names, ages, and addresses of the defendants have been withheld and the schools have not been identified.

Both parents of a 15-year-old boy have been sentenced after the child failed to regularly attend school in 2023.

The defendants each pleaded guilty to the charge against them and must pay an £80 fine as well as £150 in court costs plus £32 to fund victim services.

The father and mother of a nine-year-old girl must each pay a £350 fine as well as £238.50 in court costs and £140 to fund victim services after their daughter failed to attend school during the 2023 and 2024 school terms.

The father of two children has been sentenced after the son failed to regularly attend school in the 2019 and 2022 autumn terms, and the daughter failed to attend school regularly in 2022.

The defendant pleaded guilty to the charge and has been conditionally discharged for 12 months.

He must pay £26 to fund victim services.
