A Berkshire swan had a lucky escape this month after being hit by a car on the Windsor Relief Road bridge.

The wildlife charity, Swan Support, was called to the scene on February 5 to ensure the safety of the bird following the incident.

Emergency Services attended the incident where the driver and swan were confirmed unharmed despite damage to the driver’s car.

According to the owner of Swan Support, Wendy Hermon, the collision caused the airbags to be deployed within the car. The vehicle also sustained damage to its window screen.

Wendy said: “It was a really lucky escape because the swan hit the car with quite a force. It was bad enough that the swan could have been killed.

“We took it back to the Swan Support headquarters because it had a few superficial injuries, but it was released back into the wild in Windsor the next day.

“We’ve been seeing a lot more calls for swans and other birds who have made their way onto roads near bodies of water when the surface of the wet.”

Because the river lies on either side of the Windsor Relief Road bridge experts say that swans and other birds are often flying too low and misjudging the height and time that they need to stay in the air.

Swan Support said on their social media: “We are also grateful to TVP Windsor and Maidenhead for ensuring the swan came to no further harm until we arrived.”
