'Essential' works to refurbish a key travel route between Cookham and Bourne End is approaching the midway point.

Cookham Bridge was closed to motorists on October 16, 2023.

Councillor Geoff Hill, cabinet member for highways and transport, said: “Routine inspections have identified the need for essential maintenance to this historic bridge.

"If left unattended, extensive and longer-term strengthening works would be required in future."

The Grade II listed structure has since been fenced off with a narrow path left open for pedestrians and dismounted cyclists.

With the first stage of work out the way, work is now set to begin on resurfacing, with a sign in front of the bridge reading: "Work on top surface preparation is complete.

"Works now taking place under the bridge."

Overall the maintenance will see the re-waterproofing of the bridge and, bearing replacement, parapet repair and resurfacing.

In the meantime, the council have stated: "Access to any properties or business within the closure area will be maintained at all times."

A diversion route via the A404 or Taplow is being used during the works, with clear signage seen around the area warning of the bridge closure - including a sign at Maidenhead Bridge.

The works are expected to be completed on March 22, 2024.

The Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead have been approached for comment as to whether the works are on track to be finished at the estimated completion date.
