Windsor Girls’ School’s new Sixth Form Centre has opened for use to meet demand for places.

Six new classrooms at the front of the school are among the highlights of the new £3.6m investment, along with two all-weather sports pitches.

The project allows for the number of students admitted in each year group to increase from 208 to 230 pupils.

Co-headteachers Peter Griffiths and Eimear O’Carroll, said: “To start the academic year with this brand new building was an amazing start to the year. Our students are thoroughly enjoying the new space. We now have a first-class facility to house our first-class teaching and learning.”

The project was delivered by the Royal Borough’s Property Company on behalf of Achieving for Children – the council’s children services partner.

A combination of funding from government, the council and developers’ infrastructure contributions saw an expansion of secondary schools in the borough follow on from primary school expansion.

Other schools to have seen expansion work over the past few years include Windsor Boys’ School, Dedworth Middle School, Cox Green School, Furze Platt Senior School, Charters School and St Peter’s Middle School.

Windsor and Maidenhead council’s education lead councillor Amy Tisi said: “We’re so proud to have high quality comprehensive schools in the Royal Borough, which provide a fantastic education to help local young people get the best start in life.

“This great new Sixth Form Centre is part of our ongoing work to ensure there’s sufficient capacity to meet projected demand for pupil places where it’s needed, and I’m so pleased to see it completed and in use by the students and teachers.

“The council has a legal duty to ensure there are sufficient school places to meet demand, and this is an important part of our ongoing investment in schools and our children’s future.”
