A deaf personal trainer has opened up about breaking barriers in the industry.

Faiza Awan, 27, from Slough, was born deaf and faced challenges and societal misconceptions about her abilities throughout her life.

Her experiences impacted her confidence and opportunities, encountering many barriers while pursuing her education, making the journey to gain her GCSEs stressful and difficult.

In 2017, Faiza's perspective on health and fitness transformed when she joined a gym in her previous workplace to embark on a journey of self-improvement and lose weight.

Having experienced the benefits of regular exercise, including improved mental well-being and increased confidence, Faiza realised that she could help others achieve similar positive changes in their lives.

She went on to join the team at Langley Leisure Centre where she provide personal training.

Faiza said: “I was bored in my previous job. I was working in an office and it wasn’t for me. I wanted to pursue a career that aligned with my passion for fitness, and I wanted to help others.

“I wasn’t sure how to get started but I was determined that being deaf wouldn’t stop me.

"I sought support from Slough Borough Council, my previous employer, to help connect me to Everyone Active and was eligible to receive the support of a BSL interpreter.”

Faiza's journey as a personal trainer began with completing the entry-level two gym instructor qualification at the Everyone Active Langley Leisure Centre in Slough in 2018, later becoming fully qualified in 2021.

“I wasn’t sure whether I’d be able to finish, but I pushed hard and successfully completed my certification," Faiza added.

Talking about her role as a personal trainer, Faiza added: “I teach one-to-one personal training sessions, as well as group exercise classes like boot camp, HIIT, and legs, bums and tums - some alone, and some with the support of my interpreters.

“I love helping people accomplish their goals and overcome their personal barriers toward leading a healthy lifestyle and enjoying fitness.”

“Customers are understanding and accepting.

“Communication barriers may exist, but the support and encouragement I receive from both clients and colleagues prove that inclusivity in fitness knows no boundaries.

Sally Thomas-Ellis, Regional Contract Manager at Everyone Active, said: "Society often underestimates the capabilities of individuals with disabilities.

"When Faiza approached us, we saw her determination and potential and we were delighted to give her the opportunity she deserved."

Faiza aims to inspire others with hearing impairments to pursue their dreams without limitations.

"I would love to see more deaf people engaging in physical activities, breaking stereotypes and achieving their dreams.”
