A peaceful protest is set to take place outside a scandal-hit mental health hospital where patients claim they were physcially and sexually abused.

Taplow Manor, previously known as Huntercombe Hospital, has been declared "unfit for purpose" by the care quality watchdog, with the hospital later taking the decision to shut down.

Prior to closure Taplow Manor became an adult only facility.

It follows historic allegations of rape at the hospital and "serious concerns" over patient welfare.

Thames Valley Police were notified of a report of rape on November 3, 2022, which documented the alleged incident from 2019 involving a girl who was a patient at Taplow Manor. The incident was reported to the police by a third party.

A Thames Valley Police spokesperson said: "The force is conducting a thorough investigation into the allegation.

"No arrests have been made at this stage of the investigation."

At the time of the allegation coming to light, Taplow Manor was being managed by Active Care Group, which acquired the Huntercombe Group in 2021.

A spokesperson for Active Care Group, said: “Active Care Group took the difficult decision to close its Taplow Manor Hospital due to a change in strategic direction.

“We wish to thank our dedicated staff for the care and support they have provided to patients at Taplow Manor over the years.

"Active Care Group entered a period of consultation with staff and will take every step to ensure that those impacted are retained within the business where possible.

“Active Care Group has worked with our patients’ families and their relevant multidisciplinary teams to assist in the safe transfer or discharge of all Taplow Manor patients.

"There is currently no intention to reopen Taplow Manor."

Prior to being managed by Active Care Group, Huntercombe Hospital was managed by Elli Investment Group who were operating Taplow Manor at the time of the alleged incident.

The Elli Investment Group previously said: "We are saddened by these allegations and regret that these hospitals and specialist care services, which were owned and independently managed by The Huntercombe Group, failed to meet the expected standards for high-quality care."

Now ex-patients, service users, parents and families are set to protest outside the hospital on Saturday, August 5.

A spokesperson from the protesting group said: "We are invested in making changes to the mental health system and are campaigning against them opening as an adult facility and hope to get the place shut down for good."

The peaceful protest and vigil will take place from 1pm at Huntercombe Lane South and Wyeth Close.

Attendees and members of the public are requested to act sensitively and respectfully.
