WITH everyone trying to save money during the cost-of-living crisis, locals are looking for low-budget activities to entertain the family during the school holidays.

Slough has various free or low-cost activities on offer for families to enjoy this summer.

Advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) are taking over modern technology with softwares like ChatGPT becoming more popular.

So, we thought we'd try ChatGPT and see what it could come up with when asked to plan a day out in Slough on a budget of £40.

The first request was to ask ChatGPT to plan a day out in Slough, for a family with two children, for less than £40. It said:

Morning - Herschel Park

  • Start your day with a visit to Herschel Park, a lovely green space with a playground and open fields. Enjoy a leisurely walk around the park and let the kids have fun at the playground.

Mid-Morning - The Curve Library and Cultural Centre

  • The Curve is a modern library and cultural center in Slough, offering free entry and various activities for families. They often host children's events, workshops, and storytelling sessions.

Lunch - Picnic in the Park

  • To save money on lunch, pack a picnic with sandwiches, snacks, and drinks. You can enjoy your meal at Herschel Park or any other nearby park.

Afternoon - Slough Museum

  • Visit the Slough Museum, which is usually free to enter. It showcases the history and heritage of Slough, with interactive exhibits and displays suitable for all ages.

Afternoon Snack - Ice Cream Treat

  • Treat yourselves to some ice cream or a sweet snack from a local ice cream parlor or café.

Late Afternoon - Salt Hill Activity Centre (if within budget)

  • If you have some budget left, consider visiting the Salt Hill Activity Centre. It offers activities such as swimming, soft play, and ice-skating. Prices for activities vary, so choose the ones that fit your budget.

Dinner - Family-Friendly Eatery

  • Look for a family-friendly restaurant or pub in Slough where you can enjoy a hearty dinner. Many places have special deals or children's menus, which can be budget-friendly.

Evening Entertainment - Movie Night or Board Games

  • End the day with a cozy movie night back at your accommodation, or have some family fun with board games.

It is clear that ChatGPT doesn't factor in distance from one activity to the other or additional factors such as petrol and parking, but it has offered some great ideas.

Next, the AI software was asked to list some cheap restaurants in Slough, which it named Subway, Nando's, Pizza Hut and KFC - perhaps not the healthiest options for families this summer.

Finally, ChatGPT was asked to list free activities for families to enjoy this summer. Here's what it came up with:

Herschel Park

  • This beautiful park provides a tranquil setting for a leisurely walk or a family picnic. The park features playgrounds for children and scenic spots to relax.

Stoke Poges Memorial Gardens

  • Located just outside Slough, these gardens offer peaceful surroundings and a place to reflect. The grounds are well-maintained and include a lake and attractive pathways.

Salt Hill Park

  • This park offers open spaces, a playground, and sports facilities. It's a great place to enjoy outdoor activities, such as frisbee, football, or simply relaxing in the green space.

Slough Museum

  • The Slough Museum showcases the town's history and heritage through a range of exhibits. Entrance is typically free, making it an educational and informative visit.

Langley Park

  • Situated in the nearby town of Langley, this park offers beautiful woodland areas, ponds, and walking trails, providing a peaceful escape from the urban environment.

Observatory Shopping Centre Events

  • Check for any free events or activities organized by the Observatory Shopping Centre, as they occasionally host family-friendly events and entertainment.

The Curve Library and Cultural Centre

  • While some performances and events may require tickets, the Curve often hosts free family-oriented activities, workshops, and storytelling sessions.

Local Playgrounds

  • Slough has numerous playgrounds and play areas that are free to use, making them perfect spots for children to have fun and burn off some energy.

Burnham Beeches

  • A short drive from Slough, Burnham Beeches is a nature reserve with ancient woodland and majestic trees. It's a great place for nature walks and exploring.

Cultural Festivals and Events

  • Keep an eye out for any cultural festivals or community events happening in Slough. These often provide free entertainment and a chance to experience different cultures.

While I am aware AI doesn't factor in distance to each activity and additional costs including petrol and parking, it was fun to see what it could come up with. What would you add to the list?
