Maidenhead Rugby Club was visited by Princess Kate today for an energetic rugby game and discussion on early years.

The royal sat down with members of the rugby club and professional players to hear their thoughts on their own early years and how they have sought to support their own children.

Rugby Union player Courtney Lawes said: "The first five years of their life are so important.

"Then they get to six and seven and they start playing football – then it’s sweet," he joked.

Former England rugby player Ugo Monye was quick to point out that in a recent survey by Shaping Us - a campaign launched by Princess Kate in January - only 14 per cent of men said they understood the importance of the first five years, in comparison to 21 per cent of women

A lot of the men said they “wouldn’t know where to look” for information about caring for their children and are often led by their partners.

Ugo added “I’ve heard [people say] about taking the need off the mother.

"When we’re talking about awareness, understanding and the importance of nought to five, it feels a bit like as men we need to step into that place a bit more.”

Speaking of his own experiences, Danny Care, an English rugby union player, said: “The most important thing is time – it’s just to be there and make time for them. All they want is for you to be there.”

Princess Kate agreed, adding that it is important to be present without distractions such as a mobile phone.

The Shaping Us campaign, aimed at raising awareness of the critical importance of early childhood, recognises sporting groups as a much-needed support network for me.

Niall Crosley, Maidenhead Rugby Club player, said: “Having a sounding board to go to – having an environment where you are all going through the same thing – it’s really nice to have a network here.

Ugo said since starting rugby Courtney is a “completely different person” compared to hwo he was when they met 15 years ago.

“You’ve naturally just been a parent and had that extra sense of responsibility.”

Cortney said: “It is important to be a role model for your kids. That’s the best example they’ve got. It’s also for them to see how you and your partner interact and deal with issues.”

Princess Kate summarised: “Building strong foundations for more positive relationships is one of the key things around what is important in the first five years of life.”
