A HISTORIC pub in Colnbrook that’s ‘deteriorating’ will soon be given a new lease of life.

Planning officers approved a scheme to convert the grade II listed Star and Garter pub in Park Street into three flats following its closure in 2015.

The plans include removing the flat roof single-storey extensions to the rear, and side elevations for new ones.

Planners say these extensions are ‘without architectural or historic merit’ as it dates back to the mid-20th century and early 1990s. They also say “no loss of historic fabric of significance” will be lost during the internal arrangements of the pub.

The plans were put forward by developer Leisure Inc (Knightsbridge) Ltd which wanted to make use of the site after the building, which was built in the 1700s, failed as a pub as it couldn’t compete with other establishments such as The Ostrich.

Within the planning statement, it states the Star and Garter is ‘deteriorating’ due to a lack of financial investment and has suffered from ‘unauthorised entry and vandalism’ where the interior has been damaged as a result.

It also reads: “The building requires substantial financial investment to secure its future repair and it is considered that this can be achieved in association with renovations, through limited works of alteration, extension, and demolition, to three residential units whereby such a use affords a financially viable investment thus preserving the building and putting it to a viable use.”

Previous plans were approved to convert the pub into six flats and a ground-floor coffee shop in 2018, but a condition was placed requiring works to commence within three years of the consent date, which has now expired.

However, a separate planning application to demolish the Smithy has commenced under that timeframe.
