A FORMER Santander bank in Windsor is set to be turned into a vegetarian takeaway that serves South Indian cuisines.
In March 2021, the firm announced it was closing 111 of its branches across the UK, including the unit in Peascod Street and another in Wokingham, by August.
Since then, it has been left empty. Until now.
Royal Borough planning officers gave the go-ahead for restaurateurs to convert the vacant bank into an Indian restaurant/takeaway serving vegetarian dishes that originate from South India.

Four main dishes will be served with vegan options, including Idly, dosa, vadar, and sambar. Alongside this, it will also serve freshly squeezed juice, idli sambar coffee, and dosa chutney tea.
Within the planning statement, it reads: “The High Street is the perfect location for this food, as it gives great diversity to the High Street, and it provides an alternative choice which is also healthy.”

No major changes to the building are proposed but the applicant will install an extract duct to the rear of the restaurant.
Santander is not the only bank that Windsor has seen disappear. Halifax announced it was closing its Peascod Branch this December while Metro and Natwest, also located on Peascod Street, closed earlier this year.
