A CHARITY in Windsor has ‘big plans’ to transform a former social club into its new home to help vulnerable individuals in the community.

Windsor Christian Action, which supports vulnerable people in the Windsor community, is made up of Windsor Homeless Project, Windsor Foodshare, Windsor Street Angels and More Than a Shelter.

The charity has now secured a 25-year lease at 73a Alma Road, previously the Alma Road social club, which will enable all of its the projects to be under one roof and continue to support the homeless and vulnerable in the area.

Windsor Homeless Project manager Nick Roberts shows us around the building:

The vision for the building is to include a community café, a kitchen, garden, educational and rehabilitation support services, segregated sleeping facilities during the winter months, storage for Windsor Foodshare and a hub for the Street Angels equipment.

Mr Roberts said: “We really want to give individuals exposure and help them improve on their interpersonal skills.

“We also will be encouraging our guests who come and visit here to serve in the community café and to be more involved within the project so that it’ll given them the confidence.”

Mr Roberts explained an important part of the project will be Windsor Homeless Project’s new traineeship programme.

He said: “We want to allow some of the guests we’re supporting to take part in training sessions, which will include helping run the community café, curriculum such as learning numeracy, literacy, computer skills, confidence building and wellbeing.

“It’s a work in progress at the moment but that is our ambition.

“We’d ideally love to be able to see more of our guests get jobs eventually, and by working with the local job centres, we hope we can support them in doing that.”
