RIVER safety awareness was learnt by a group of Slough residents along the Jubilee River.

The Jubilee River Riverside Centre hosted the river safety event at its site on Sunday, July 3 for families to learn more about the awareness of keeping safe when entering the water.

The event was organised by the Chalvey Community Partnership, as part of its monthly Chalvey Activity Food and Fun (CAFF) club.

It also formed part of the activities taking place as part of Chalvey Action Week.

The day was attended by more than 50 people, Thames Valley Police, Slough Fire Brigade, the Beaconsfield Water Rescue Crew, Slough Borough Council and Cllr Akbar.

TVP officers PCSO Charly Matthews and PCSO Danyal Ghazi also went along to join in.

Children also tried out canoeing and the adults tried some magnet fishing and caught old pennies.

On June 24, police were called to Amerden Lane, Taplow, at 5.30pm by members of the public who reported a boy enterting the water.

The 16-year-old was unable to be saved despite a ‘courageous’ and ‘brave’ effort from a member of the public who entered the river shortly after.

Thames Valley Police said the boy’s death was being treated as unexplained but not suspicious.

And 20-year-old Michael Scaife also lost his life in the Jubilee River in 2015.

The council said the Safer Slough Partnership has been campaigning to raise awareness of the dangers of the water.

And it is continuing its efforts to make everyone aware of river safety to ensure similar incidents don't happen in the future.
