A NEW cinema, a hotel extension, and a name change to Windsor shopping centre are being considered by the owners – and you can have your say.

AEW UK Investment Management bought Windsor Yards last year in hopes to rejuvenate the 260,700sqft centre, which has a mix of retail, hotel, supermarket, car park, and residential, into a ‘modern development’.

A spokesperson told the Local Democracy Reporting Service they are thinking of a number of changes to Windsor Yards in hopes to attract more businesses – particularly restaurants and bars – to move into the empty units as well as be more amenable to the town’s night-time economy.

Some of the options include the possibility of a cinema, adding more rooms at the Travelodge Hotel by adding another floor to the building, a second hotel, residential build to rent apartments, and public realm enhancements.

But the owners are wanting to hear people’s views on the Windsor Yards rejuvenation at the former Fenwick unit at Windsor Yards on Thursday, July 7 and Saturday, July 9.

The spokesperson said: “This is for the rejuvenation of the shopping centre rather than a rebuild. It’s trying to bring new life to a shopping centre that has a fair number of challenges at the moment.

“There are a number of unoccupied units and this is a significant potential investment into the centre, which would have some definite advantages.”

They added if the rejuvenation plans go ahead, none of the businesses are required to close during the works.

When AEW UK bought Windsor Yards in May 2021, a petition was set up urging the new owners to consider changing the name to Duke of Edinburgh Court in honour of Prince Philip, who died on April 9, aged 99.

The shopping centre’s name was changed by its previous owners in 2017 from King Edward Court.

Residents believe the name Windsor Yards sounds like a “dirty, low rent type name” and is not in keeping with the area. Windsor MP Adam Afriyie also called for the name to change.

The spokesperson said: “We are proposing just to at this consultation event to essentially give people the opportunity to suggest a name that they feel to be appropriate.

“We’re not wedded to the name Windsor Yards because we appreciate that it’s not a name that is particularly historic.

“But having said that, we’re not saying we’re going to change the name either. We’re just giving people the opportunity at the consultation events to give us their thoughts on what name they think is the most appropriate, and once we’ve seen that feedback, we will look at it and give it some thought.”
