PLANS to redevelop a former garden centre into 30 homes have been given the final sign off by planning officers.

Developer Square Bay was given the final go-ahead to demolish the Squires Garden Centre in Maidenhead Road, Windsor, and build eight apartments and 22 three-bed and four-bedroom homes.

All of the flats and one three-bed house are affordable. 67 car parking spaces are included, as well as cycle storage and private garden space for the homes.

Councillors sitting on the Windsor and Ascot development management panel narrowly approved the revised scheme in April despite the 69 objections.

Residents were concerned about the poor air quality around the area as well as the “nightmare” traffic on the A308 and road safety.

Despite the plans being given the nod by elected representatives, the scheme was subject to the developer completing its section 106 with the council, which is an agreement between the developer and local authority to make developments acceptable.

The agreement secured a mix of affordable housing at the site, including four social rent, four shared ownership, and one affordable rent.

It will also give a financial contribution to the council for highway improvements on the A308 corridor and to upgrade the nearby crossing. The developer was also required to pay into a fund to ‘offset’ the remaining carbon emissions from the development.

With this now finalised, this gives the developer the right to start demolishing the former garden centre and build the new homes.
