ROYAL Borough children attended the 21-gun salute outside Windsor Castle to mark the Queen’s 96th birthday.

The council organised the firing of mini cannon on The Long Walk, near the Brook Street, on Thursday, April 21.

Led by the mayor, Councillor John Story, around 2,000 people joined on the day and several children were chosen to fire the cannons under safe supervision.

The Mayor said: “I was delighted to lead this event and celebrate Her Majesty’s birthday with residents of all ages.

“The day was a great success, it was wonderful to see people join together and mark the occasion and the smiles on the day really showed how much everyone enjoyed themselves."

 Cllr Story added the traditional 21-gun salute was a chance for younger residents to be involved in the celebrations.

He said: “This year, the celebrations are even more special as we mark The Queen’s historic Platinum Jubilee year, recognising 70 years’ of dedicated service to the nation.

“Thank you to everyone who came along to wish Her Majesty a Happy Birthday, the day really showed how proud we are to have her as a resident of the borough.”
