A ‘DETERIORATING’ Slough pub built in the 1700s could be converted into flats if planning officers give the go-ahead.

Developer Leisure Inc (Knightsbridge) Ltd has submitted plans to convert the Star and Garter in Park Street, Colnbrook, into three flats.

The grade II listed pub has been vacant since 2015 as it “failed as a drinking establishment” and couldn’t compete with nearby pubs such as The Ostrich.

Despite efforts from the Slough and Windsor branch of the Campaign for Real Ale, which supports and advocates for thriving UK pubs, to keep it as a community asset after the pub closed, it was rejected by the council.

Within the planning statement, it states the Star and Garter is ‘deteriorating’ due to a lack of financial investment and has suffered from ‘unauthorised entry and vandalism’ where the interior has been damaged as a result.

Plans were approved to convert the pub into six flats and a ground-floor coffee shop in 2018, but a condition was placed requiring works to commence within three years of the consent date, which has now expired.

However, a separate planning application to demolish the Smithy has commenced under that timeframe.

Now the developer is back with a revised scheme to carry out this work. The proposal includes removing the flat roof single-storey extensions to the rear, and side elevations for new ones.

Planners say these extensions are ‘without architectural or historic merit’ as it dates back from the mid-20th century and early 1990s.

They also say “no loss of historic fabric of significance” will be lost during the internal arrangements of the pub if plans are approved.

In the planning statement, it reads: “The building requires substantial financial investment to secure its future repair and it is considered that this can be achieved in association with renovations, through limited works of alteration, extension, and demolition, to three residential units whereby such a use affords a financially viable investment thus preserving the building and putting it to a viable use.”

The plans are yet to be decided by Slough planning officers. To view the application, use the code P/14825/016 on the council’s planning portal.
