THE need for a controversial multi-storey car park in Maidenhead “still stands” in a post-Covid world as its completion remains on track.

Construction contractors Buckingham Group are ‘on programme and budget’ to complete the Vicus Way car park in Oldfield ward where its opening is planned in September 2022.

This was part of former Conservative councillor Ed Wilson’s question to the lead member for transport, infrastructure, and digital connectivity, Cllr Gerry Clark (Con: Bisham & Cookham) at a full council meeting.

The £11.68m project is to build a new multi-storey car park at Vicus Way where it will accommodate more than 200 spaces for commuters and town centre employees in hopes to support businesses and free up parking spaces for short-stay visitors and shoppers.

Previously, the opposition questioned if Maidenhead really needed the ‘eyesore’ car park in a post-Covid world given the swap to working from home either full-time or part-time.

At the council meeting on Tuesday, January 25, Mr Wilson further enquired if the original business case for Vicus Way was still achievable.

In response, Cllr Clark said: “Clearly, we had a number of disruptions to business life both in the town and in the country but that is now returning significantly.

“With the Covid threat manageable and business life now accelerating with the economy growing and unemployment at a record low – I am confident that the business case still stands.”
