A RESTAURANT chain is branching out with its first venue in York after making its mark in the capital.

Work is underway refurbishing the property at 1-3 Coney Street ready for the launch of Rosa’s Thai Café, subject to planning.

Saiphin and her husband Alex Moore who first launched Rosa's Thai Cafe in London’s iconic Brick Lane back in 2008 hope to open in York early in 2022.

It is not yet known how many jobs the venture will create.

Helmsley Group, the York-based property specialist, has officially confirmed the letting to the business which describes itself as 'the home of modern Thai food.

It will occupy 4,782 sq ft of space within the unit, which formerly housed Joe’s Kitchen.

Rosa’s Thai Cafe is renowned for its punchy and flavoursome Thai food inspired by Saiphin’s family recipes, using authentic Thai ingredients alongside locally-sourced British produce.

Guests to the new York restaurant can expect fragrant favourites such as salmon red curry through to stir-fried aubergine with chilli and basil, and Rosa’s signature Pad Thai dish.

For those with room for dessert there’s also a concise selection of traditional and refreshing sweets such as mango & sticky rice and coconut cream ice cream.

The company's annual report, in March 2021, stated that it planned to continue its expansion by opening six to eight restaurants a year - half of which would be in London, and the rest elsewhere, with venues already in Liverpool, Manchester and Leeds..

In May 2021, Helmsley Group purchased several units on Coney Street, including units 1-3, from M&G, the London-based asset management company.

At the time of the deal, the group described the purchase as an example of an ongoing shift within property ownership as it moves away from remote London funds and into the hands of local developers.

Launched in 2006 in a market stall on Brick Lane, London, Rosa’s Thai Café now boasts restaurants in 30 locations, the majority of which are in the capital.

Ed Harrowsmith, syndicated property director at The Helmsley Group, said: “We’re really pleased to have secured a prime letting to Rosa’s Thai Café, which has chosen Coney Street as the launch site of one of its few outlets outside London.

"This is a positive endorsement for the city and the letting forms part of our ongoing strategy to regenerate Coney Street, cementing a positive future for York’s retail and leisure offering, and helping the city to build back better following the impact of Covid-19.”

He added: “As one of York’s longest-serving and most well-known property companies, we have a responsibility to support the city’s built environment, community and economy, which includes creating resilient, diverse high streets that are attractive to both local people and visitors.”
