A DEMOLISHED care home site in a rural village could see new retirement homes built if councillors give the thumbs up.

Applicants McCarthy and Stone want to erect 40 apartments for the over 60’s on a parcel of land, which Stone Court and Stone Court Cottage used to stand, in London Road, Sunningdale.

The flats will be a mix of one and two-bedrooms, while other proposal include community facilities, a communal garden, and 36 car parking spaces – which includes three disabled bays.

Planning officers have recommended giving the scheme approval where councillors on the Windsor and Ascot development management panel will consider this application on Wednesday, October 6.

Sunningdale Parish Council requested for the plans to be refused, fearing the site will be overdeveloped, the designs are out of keeping with the ‘villas in a woodland setting’, and criticised it for proposing zero affordable homes.

But planning officers take a different view, believing the building’s design does not represent an overdevelopment and is in keeping with the area, citing it is in similar size with other blocks such as the nearby block of flats known as Fairfield House.

Plans to demolish an existing care home for a new one, which provides 61-beds, were approved in 2013 and the retirement homes will share the site with that development.
