RESIDENTS fear drunken rowdy behaviour will cause ‘sleepless’ nights if pub plans are given the go-ahead by councillors.

The Carpenters Arm, 78 Upper Village Road, Sunninghill, has submitted a licensing application to serve alcohol until midnight as well as to close at 12.30am, seven days a week.

They also want to play live and recorded music until 1am on New Year’s Eve and operate outside Sunday hours only on Good Friday and Christmas Day.

However, 19 residents have since lodged objections to the plans, fearing they will have ‘sleepless’ nights from loud and rowdy behaviour in the late hours.

The pub is located in a residential area and locals have vented their frustration after experiencing loud noises and rowdy behaviour.

One resident wrote that the noise has got so bad that her son had to sleep on the sofa on occasion to “get away” from the noise.

She wrote: “I accept the pub will create some noise and I’m not a killjoy, but the level of noises created in the garden area is getting so much worse and if they are able to stay open and serve alcohol later and be able to play live and recorded music, this will make it unbearable and result in unreasonable disturbance to neighbours.”

Underneath the objections, a few residents expressed their support for the pub plans – with one saying they have never experienced rowdy drunken behaviour coming from the pub.

They wrote: “In the years that it has been in the current ownership, I have never experienced any disturbance or examples of drunken behaviour. It is run on a highly professional basis hence attracting a responsible cross-section of clientele.

“At the weekends, it is a pleasure to witness happy families arrive to enjoy its friendly atmosphere. They all leave with good regard for the neighbours.”

The pub’s application will be heard at a licensing panel sub-committee on Friday, August 6.
