Roundabouts across Windsor were given a patriotic makeover in support of England in Euros 2020 - but the council says it could distract drivers.

A roundabout in the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead was painted over last week to look like the St George's flag in support of Gareth Southgate's Three Lions team.

The move was largely supported by residents but some believe 'vandalism doesn't show support'.

Since then, a video has appeared on social media of council workers painting over a red cross on one of Windsor's roundabouts, which led to anger from some residents.

One person on Slough Official's Instagram page said: "There's no way people are going to get p***** over this right?."

Other residents think the red cross will confuse drivers and could cause an accident.

RBWM council spokesman said that while they are fully behind the England football team, they had to repaint the roundabouts 'for safety reasons'.

They said: "While we had to repaint the roundabouts for safety reasons because of the possibility of motorists being distracted, we do encourage the community to show their support for the national side during Euro 2020.

"There are safer ways to do this and we would ask people to use their own property to display the England colours. The council itself is showing its support for England ahead of their semi-final against Denmark by flying the St George’s flag from Maidenhead Town Hall and Windsor Guildhall from Wednesday morning.”

England will face Denmark in the Euro 2020 semi-final on Wednesday at 8pm.
