A man has avoided jail despite being found with cannabis in police custody having nearly crashed his car into officers hours earlier.

Maciej Wawrzyniak, of Hawthorne Road, High Wycombe, was banned from driving and fined more than £1,000 after he was convicted of driving and drug offences last week.

The 25-year-old was driving a BMW on the A355 Farnham Road at around 3am on 30 June 2019 when he nearly collided into a police vehicle.

He was stopped by officers and tested for drugs.

The High Wycombe man tested positive for cannabis and when police searched his car they found a small quantity of the drug.

More cannabis was found on the 25-year-old while he was in custody but he failed to provide a blood sample for testing.

Investigating officer PC Jonathan Housby, of the Roads Policing Unit, said: “Maciej Wawrzyniak made multiple attempts to muddy the water during this investigation. However, I am pleased that the evidence was strong enough to convict him of failing to provide a specimen for drug analysis and possession of cannabis.”

Wawrzyniak was banned from driving for 18 months, ordered to carry out 120 hours on unpaid work and fined £1,250 following a sentencing at Reading Magistrates Court on Tuesday, June 8.

PC Housby added: “This case sends out a clear message to those who choose not provide a specimen for drug analysis, Thames Valley Police will investigate, you will be convicted, and you will be banned from driving.”
