ALMOST 50 people in Berkshire tested positive for coronavirus in the past 24 hours, the latest figures show.

Public Health England has recorded 47 new lab-confirmed cases in the past 24 hours, in areas including Reading, Bracknell, Wokingham, West Berkshire, Slough and Windsor and Maidenhead.

These figures, correct as of Wednesday, April 87, at 4pm bring the latest total for the county to 56,568 coronavirus cases.

The local breakdown for the past 24 hours as follows:

  • Reading - 4 case, 10,908 total
  • Bracknell Forest - 8 cases, 7,082 total
  • Wokingham - 9 cases, 8,235 total
  • West Berkshire - 5 cases, 6,363 total
  • Slough - 11 cases, 15,493 total
  • Windsor and Maidenhead - 10 cases, 8,487 total

There have now been 4,411,797 people across the UK who have tested positive for Covid-19 - a daily increase of 2,166.

The government said a further 29 people have died having tested positive for Covid-19. The total number of deaths in England is 127,480.

The latest seven-day rate per 100,000 people locally are as follows:

  • Reading - 28.4
  • Bracknell Forest - 16.3
  • Wokingham - 23.4
  • West Berkshire - 15.1
  • Windsor and Maidenhead - 30.4
  • Slough - 63.5

The UK is sending more vital oxygen equipment to India, with ministers describing the spiralling coronavirus crisis there as “harrowing”.

The Foreign Office said that three oxygen generation units the size of shipping containers will be sent from surplus stocks in Northern Ireland to help the country tackle the virus.

Each units is capable of producing 500 litres of oxygen per minute, enough for 50 people to use at a time, it added.

It follows the UK sending 495 oxygen concentrators and 200 ventilators to the country, with the first shipment arriving in Delhi on Tuesday.

India’s coronavirus death toll stands at more than 200,000 lives lost, with reports of Indian hospitals overrun and severe shortages of oxygen supplies.

Health Secretary Matt Hancock described the situation in India as “harrowing”.
