POLICE officers scrambled to search for culprits who attempted to steal from cars in Maidenhead.

About 20 police officers chased after a would-be thief who was found hiding in a nearby river. 

At around 10pm on Tuesday, March 30, police were called to a theft attempt on a residents driveway on Blackamoor Lane, Maidenhead.

CCTV footage showed two men picking up stones in preparation before the car theft.

When police arrived they fled the scene on bikes and approximately 20 officers including a dog unit quickly dispersed to find them.

Where the incident happened

Nothing was stolen. 

A spokesman said on social media: "One of the males was found hiding in the nearby river. He was initially arrested on suspicion of vehicle interference and possession of a quantity of class C drugs and taken to custody."

The other culprit managed to escape from police.

Police added: "There have been several thefts from vehicles this week, mostly in the Furze Platt area, please remove all valuables from your cars and vans.

"If you witness this crime phone police straight away via 999."
