THERE’S “no evidence” to suggest the Oxford/AstraZenca Covid-19 vaccine causes blood clots, the Royal Borough’s health lead said.

Councillor Stuart Carroll, lead member for health and social care, as well as being on the UK’s vaccine task force, told the Observer there is no “emerging trend” the vaccine is the root cause of blood clots and emphasised the vaccines are “extremely safe”.

Some countries, such as Norway and Denmark, temporarily paused Oxford/AstraZenca vaccinations to investigate reports of blood clots among people who had the jab.

In media reports, AstraZenca, the World Health Organisation, and the UK’s Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) have said there is no evidence to suggest the vaccines caused blood clot problems.

Speaking to the Observer, Cllr Carroll said: “Millions and millions of doses have been administered and millions and millions of people have had no side-effects or adverse events whatsoever.

“In the UK, we have a world-class, world-leading regulator in the form of the MHRA and they are not picking up or detecting any of those concerns so far as part of its extensive surveillance that it does.

“The MHRA also does extensive follow-up on every single vaccine that is administered to the extent that if anybody does have a side-effect or adverse event that can be reported and thoroughly analysed to ensure that it’s not a consequence of the vaccine itself.”

He added: “It’s unfortunate of course when anybody suffers from any kind of episode like that, and my thoughts and prayers are with those people and their friends and family – but we must distinguish between that very sad and unfortunate event verses a vaccine impact.

“At this point, there’s no evidence to suggest that is being caused by the vaccine itself.”

Cllr Carroll added residents should go and get vaccinated when they are contacted by the NHS.
