A MAIDENHEAD deli manager was fined £1,000 for failing to label his food products in English.

Bartosz Rybka, store manager of Pierozek Polish Deli on Market Street, admitted failings to comply with an improvement notice at Reading Court Magistrates on Wednesday 3 February.

Mr Rybka was fined £1,000, ordered to pay £500 costs and a £100 victim surcharge. The total is payable within 28 days.

Advice and a warning was issued by the Royal Borough’s trading standards team after they found his shop – which sells predominantly Polish items – food products were repeatedly found not labelled in English.

A subsequent visit to the shop found that there were still foodstuff not labelled in English and therefore a prosecution was proceeded with.

The court heard it was a serious matter and imposed a high fine, relative to Mr Rybka’s personal means, because of the consequences if a member of the public had consumed allergens via an unlabelled item.

Councillor David Cannon, lead member for public protection, said: “This demonstrates the persistence of the Royal Borough’s trading standards team in protecting residents from potentially catastrophic consequences.

“It also shows that we want to work with businesses to offer advice and guidance on the law before having to take enforcement action.”
