Thames Valley Police have apologised after a "keen officer" offended shoppers with Covid-19 warning leaflets.

A post on Facebook from Maidenhead Councillor David Cannon addressed concerns raised on social media about leaflets handed to shoppers driving between towns to the supermarket.

Residents in Bracknell also said they were handed a Covid-19 leaflet from police asking them why they are driving to a park for exercise.

In response to the Cllr from police, posted online, the force reportedly apologised for the "overly keen officer".

They said: "We are aware of the leaflets handed out and that drivers have been stopped and challenged. This was not Windsor and Maidenhead Officers but was TVP officers and therefore TVP apologise for any upset caused.

"This was an individual officer who was just a bit keen, this has been addressed and should not happen again. However, if it does please let TVP know as soon as possible.

"TVP will continue with our consistent approach of Engaging, Explaining, Encouraging and will Enforce where this is a blatant breach of legislation. We recognise the importance of working with our communities in all areas of policing, we particularly value your continued support during this latest (and hopefully final) lockdown."
