Students at Slough's Ditton Park Academy raised almost £500 for the Save the Children charity by taking part in a sponsored 5km run - without leaving the school premises.

The pupils from the school at Kings Reach were all sixth formers who take part in special 'enrichment' classes, designed to help them develop life skills and independence.

The lessons can cover everything from completing a First Aid qualification for those who want to become medics, cooking together as they prepare for university, or learning about personal finances.

The 5km run saw them building up their sporting prowess by running round the Academy in circuits in miserable weather, raising £484 for Save the Children as they went.

Other pupils at the school have been involved in their own initiatives - including putting together a Christmas hamper of gifts for a residential home and contributing to Slough Foodbank.

It was all described by vice-principal Chris McNab as a 'fantastic and humbling way to finish a week'.
