Creating a mini-saga in just 100 words can be quite a challenge.

But pupils at Long Close Senior School in Upton Court Road, Slough know that good things come in small packages.

The school has had 32 of its pupils' stories accepted for publication by the Young Writers publishing company in one of its regular anthologies of children's work.

The publishing company holds regular competitions and this year's challenge was to write a thrilling mini-saga in just 100 words.

Rachel Owens, head of English at the school, said: “Since introducing the Accelerated Reader programme into the senior school, the children have made excellent progress in their literacy skills. "Condensing a story into just 100 words while keeping the reader engaged is not as easy as it sounds, so I am delighted for them.”

One submitted story by 11-year-old Freddie provided an example of how imaginative pupils can be.

It was about some children who were locked in a cage by their father. It ended on a cliff hanger so readers had to decide whether the children were set free or not.

*Young Writers was established in 1991 with the aim of encouraging young people to engage in creative writing. The organisation runs a variety of competitions throughout the year and publishes the best entries.
