Firefighters have been battling a blaze that destroyed two bungalows on The Island, Wraysbury in the early hours of this morning.

They were called at 3.45am after a blaze which engulfed one of the homes spread next door.

The occupants had got out safely but could only watch helplessly as six fire crews from Surrey, London and Berkshire worked.

Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service crews from Langley and Slough were sent to the scene alongside crews from Surrey Fire and Rescue Service, London Fire Brigade and Buckinghamshire and Milton Keynes Fire and Rescue Service with four officers.

They were unable to get into the bungalows as the fire was too advanced which made their task more complicated.

Firefighters extinguished the fire using two light portable pumps to draw water from the Thames that fed six firefighting jets.

Crews were initially on the scene for about six hours, three crews currently remain damping down and ensuring the area is safe.

A fire investigation is being carried out to determine the cause of the fire.
