Maidenhead MP Theresa May has congratulated Joe Biden and Kamala Harris on their White House win.

The pair raced ahead of Donald Trump and Mike Pence in the US election, with Mr Biden crossing 270 electoral college votes with a win in Pennsylvania.

The former Prime Minister tweeted: “Your election marks a new chapter in the history of your country and in the special partnership between our two nations.

“The UK and US will always work together to defend our shared values.”

Mrs May's tweet comes after more than three days of uncertainty as election officials sorted through a surge of postal votes that delayed the processing of some ballots.

Mr Trump refused to concede, threatening further legal action on ballot counting.

He has pointed to delays in processing the vote in some states to allege with no evidence that there was voter fraud and to argue that his rival was trying to seize power – an extraordinary charge by a sitting president.

Ms Harris made history as the first black woman to become vice president, an achievement that comes as the US faces a reckoning on racial justice.
