Colnbrook village is to get a new community hub on the site of the former GP surgery - as hopes grow that villagers may get a GP service back as well.

Slough Borough Council has bought the site in the High Street and plans to use it as a meeting space for local groups, as well as a hub for a wide range of services and activities.

The council has also started discussions with East Berkshire's Clinical Commissioning Group about a possible return of a GP service - there were protests in 2017 when the surgery closed after serving as a branch of the Langley Health Centre a mile away for many years.

The planned new hub on the site will act as a council access point and deliver a range of public sector and voluntary services under one roof – including providing a potential base for the parish council.

The decision to buy the old surgery has delighted Cllr Avtar Cheema, ward councillor for Colnbrook with Poyle and former mayor of Slough, who initially suggested the council should do it.

She said: “I am absolutely thrilled by this news.

“I have repeatedly raised issues around community services being based in Colnbrook so I am delighted the council has purchased the former GP surgery to return it to community use.

“I now look forward to working with the council to create a multi-purpose offer for Colnbrook that will meet the needs of our community.”

Cllr Natasa Pantelic, the council's lead member for health and wellbeing said consultations with residents would be held over the next few months.

Council leader James Swindlehurst said: “We have long been committed to expanding the range of community services available in Colnbrook and the purchase of this building will enable this.

“I look forward to working with local ward councillors and the Parish Council."
