YOUNGSTERS from a local primary school put smiles on elderly residents’ faces recently after handing out gift baskets at Sandhurst Day Centre.

Year six children from Uplands Primary School and Nursery gave out the treats — made up of donations from families and school staff — as part of their harvest celebration this year.

Recipients at the Day Centre were said to be “overwhelmed” with their gifts, which included harvest pictures, poems and messages from the pupils to cheer them up.

Phil Sherwood, Uplands head teacher, said: “This year, we wanted to use our traditional harvest celebrations as an opportunity to get back out into our local community.

“In previous years, we have donated to local food banks, but this year decided to deliver baskets of treats to some of our local residents.

“The pandemic had left more and more of our community finding it harder to get out or find community support and camaraderie, so our kind school community donated treats such as biscuits and puzzle books for us to deliver to the community in the form of baskets.

“It was a very rewarding experience for our pupils who were able to delivery to Sandhurst Day Centre and local residents’ doorsteps and for our staff to feel like they had made a difference to our community.

“Our pupils also used the harvest celebrations as a chance to learn about giving to others in class, and built their English lessons around writing poems and letters to the recipients of the baskets.

“I would also like to say thanks to all our families for their kind donations – without them, we could not have made it as much of a success.”

Uplands pupils delivered the baskets on Friday, 15 October after holding a socially distanced assembly on the playground (their first of the year!).
