Eleven injured people have been rushed to hospital after 14 cars crash into each other on the M40.

The crash happened on the M40 southbound between junctions 4 (Handy Cross) and 3 (Loudwater) just before 6pm.

It has caused around five miles of tailbacks as police, ambulance, air ambulance and fire crews from High Wycombe, Beaconsfield, Gerrards Cross and Maidenhead work at the scene.

A South Central Ambulance Service spokesman said: "SCAS were called this evening at 17:44 to the M40 between junction 4 and 2 southbound, to a collision involving approximately 14 vehicles.

"We had on scene seven ambulance crews, two paramedic officers, tactical advisor and two Hazardous Area Response Teams (HART).

"They have been assessing over 20 casualties, 11 have been taken to Wexham Park Hospital with serious or minor injuries.  Other casualties were assessed at the scene by our crews but did not require hospital treatment.

"SCAS teams have been working alongside colleagues from Thames Valley Police and Buckinghamshire Fire to respond to this multi-vehicle collision."
