A 'community fridge' aimed at tackling food waste and helping those struggling to feed themselves has been launched in Windsor.

The fridge is based at the Community Wellbeing Hub in Alexandra Gardens car park by the yellow duck boat.

The fridge will be open every day except Thursday from noon until 2pm to enable residents and businesses to share surplus food and for anyone to help themselves to quality food that would otherwise be wasted.

Social distancing will be observed with one person entering the hub at one time, masks will need to be worn and antiseptic gel will be provided.

Community Fridge aims to relieve pressures on household food budgets, provide a community area that fosters sharing and collaboration, reduce local business food waste, and raise public awareness around this food issue.

The fridge in Windsor is the brainchild of Tiia Stephens who also launched and runs Driven Forward which she established to help adults in Berkshire who are socially excluded, isolated, lonely and vulnerable.

Tiia said of the new community fridge: "This is a new, but also tried and tested scheme which provides a real win/win from both an ecological and community perspective. I am really excited about it and want to get the word out that we are here. I would also love to welcome some new volunteers to help as I expect to be very busy in the coming weeks."

Tiia is also an active member of Windsor Lions Club.
