Angry housing tenant Sharon O'Reilly who was awarded £500 compensation against Slough Council has used the money to go shopping - for her local foodbank.

Sharon, of Gosling Road, Langley, made a number of complaints against the council, after approaching it about damage caused to her house by loft extension work carried out in a neighbouring property.

The report by the Housing Ombudsman found that delays in getting the repairs done had caused ‘distress and inconvenience’ to Miss O’Reilly - and that her formal complaints were ‘not handled appropriately’ by Slough Borough Council, although it rejected some of her complaints.

Sharon has not actually received the money yet. But last week she 'jumped the gun' and went shopping at Booker Cash and Carry in Slough to spend the anticipated compensation on things for her nearest food bank.

She said: "I decided it was not my money to spend on myself - it was taxpayers' money as the council does not have any money of its own. So I would put it to good use."

Slough Council says it has undertaken a review of its complaints handling process following the Ombudsman's decision and has put improvements in place. In addition it is completing a review of the whole of its complaints handling process in light of the Housing Ombudsman’s new code of practice issued in July.
