A POSSIBLE ‘landmark’ pedestrian crossing could be introduced in Windsor – and residents can have their say.

A themed pedestrian crossing with a message or design could be painted in Windsor – location yet to be decided – which could potentially celebrate either pride, volunteers or charities, the NHS, the town’s heritage, etc.

The plans are currently at an early stage and, once completed, it could boost tourism and the local economy of the town centre.

Residents can voice their opinions on the potential theme as councillor Gerry Clark (Conservative: Bisham and Cookham), lead member for transport and infrastructure, explained to Windsor Town Forum members on July 22 (Wednesday), a ‘webbed’ consultation will be undertaken to see what local would like to see.

Councillor Amy Tisi (Liberal Democrats: Clewer East) asked if the consultation will have a selection of choices rather than have it open ended to avoid another ‘Boaty McBoatface situation’.

In response, Cllr Clark said they will go the public to see the range of themes presented and the ones which garner the most support will be added to the consultation for residents to make the final choice.

He added an option for residents to be against to the idea of a themed crossing will be considered.

Councillor Neil Knowles (Old Windsor Residents’ Association: Old Windsor) said: “I personally think if it’s done well, you could end up with a road landmark much like Abbey Road in London where people are actually travelling to have a picture taken crossing the pedestrian crossing.”

Once the consultation is completed, a plan will be formed to look at the costs and validated to see if it’s good value for money before it moves forward – but Cllr Clark said he anticipates it will cost a ‘very low’ thousands of pounds.

He added the future theme or message could be changed to another one or removed for reasons ‘they can’t foresee’.

Maidenhead could also get a pedestrian crossing somewhere but with a different theme or message.
