BEWARE of going into open bodies of water – a safety film is to be made warning young people about the dangers.

Councillors agreed on a motion at a Slough full council meeting on July 21 (Tuesday) for the council to make the short video revealing how swimming in the Jubilee River remains a constant threat.

The safety message will be shown in schools in Easter, highlighting the horrors of cold-water shock and how vandalising life buoys could affect an emergency situation.

The motion was brought forward by councillor Rajinder Sandhu (Upton: Independent) where the council will work with partners and families who have lost loved ones to promote the film and write to the Slough MP, Tan Dhesi, to continue to raise this issue at Parliament and lobby the government.

Councillor Natasa Pantelic (Cippenham Meadows: Labour), lead member for health and wellbeing – who seconded the motion – told the meeting how moved she was by the families of Michael Scaife and Dajarn Daly who sadly drowned in the Jubilee River.

She said: “I spoke to Michael Scaife’s mother and what she had to share was heart-breaking.

“We are doing everything we can to promote water safety in the Jubilee River but more needs to be done to educate children and young people in schools.

“This is why a video warning about the dangers of swimming in open water is so important which potentially includes interviews with young people and the matter being raised in Parliament too so there is a national drive to raise awareness and make sure water safety education is taking place.’’
