THE Liberal Democrats will hold a meeting to consider a former Conservative councillor’s defection to their party.

Former Tory councillor Gurch Singh (St Mary’s) applied to join the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead Lib Dems following his suspension from the Conservative group after being under internal investigation for a series of potential breaches.

The Liberal Democrat executive committee will hold a meeting next Monday (June 29) to consider Cllr Singh’s application, which could result in a formal investigation of the accusations which will take five weeks to complete.

In a statement released by the Royal Borough Lib Dems, they said: “We once again urge any person or body, including the local Conservative Party, to disclose fully the evidence they hold that serves to substantiate any of the serious allegations that have been made in relation to Councillor Singh’s past conduct, together with details of any investigations held whether in progress or concluded, and to do this prior to the meeting to be held on Monday.”

Councillor Singh’s application could be denied if it damages the party’s reputation or if there’s ‘material disagreement, evidenced by conduct, with the fundamental values and objectives’ of the Liberal Democrats.

The leader of the council, councillor Andrew Johnson (Conservative: Hurley and Walthams), announced in a statement last week councillor Singh defected to the Liberal Democrats to avoid expulsion from the Tory party.
